14 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 14th May [1894]. Whit Monday. Bank Holiday. Up to breakfast at 9. Wrote letters to Henry’s dictation. Copied music. Practised guitar. Augusta Gregory came to luncheon & I drove her & Isabel Du Cane down to Newstead. Nela stayed with Henry. It was a lovely day & the streets were full of people going out of town– We drove by the Fulham Road over Putney Bridge & up Putney Hill on to Wimbledon common– Found most of the Du Cane girls also driven down– Alice was sitting on the lawn & there we had tea– The azaleas & rhododendrons were out & the horse chestnuts & the new green leaves made the trees look fresh & beautiful. Alice picked flowers for me to take back to Henry. I found him glad to have me back when we arrived at 6.30 but I fear he had a dull afternoon & was rather depressed– I & Nurse dined together. Nela went to her own home for dinner. I played patience in the eveng & Henry superintended till he went to bed at 11. I was thinking this morning how I should give my maid Agnes warning when she suddenly gave me warning—saving me the trouble– How things simplify themselves!
