19 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 19th May [1894]. Up to breakfast at 9. Practised guitar. Wrote. Abt ¼ to 12 Mrs Browning called. She was looking well & was much softened in her speech as regards the disagreement with her husband. She says she is going to live in Staffordshire to be near Canon Knox Little to work among the poor so as to have some occupation but I could see more & more a softening & a desire to return to him & she herself expressed a hope that her love for him & her prayers would some day be of avail in bringing him round. I had ordered the carriage at 12 so I took her to Ebury St where she is lodging & then went on to Sloane St to call on the Lindseys & offered them the carriage to drive in the afternoon which they accepted & were to drive up to see Henry. I was going out with Elaine Guest but she was not well & put me off. I sat with Henry some time & installed him in his arm chair. Augusta Gregory called & we walked out together to [illegible word] Galleries near Waterloo Place to see Mr Hamilton Aide’s Exhibition of water colours. There were sketches from different parts of the world—interesting & pretty but not strong. We then walked back to the New Gallery. There was not much that was interesting. Shannon’s portraits remarkably bad– Watts has fine things & Clara Montalba’s “St Marks” was very beautiful. Mr Logsdails pictures did not look so well as they did in his studio—the effects were hard & chalky. Walked home by 5 & had tea. Henry was still sitting up & had had a long visit from Sir Henry Thompson. Augusta left abt 6 & I went up & sat with Henry till dinner time. Mrs Dyer & Stella & Ruth Du Cane dined with us & sat by turns with Henry in eveng.
