20 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 20th May [1894]. I went after breakfast to 17 Cav. Sqr to see Blanche & Edward who returned from Scotland this morning at 7 & then Nela & I went to church at Mr Haweis chapel in Westmoreland St. He preached a most extraordinary sermon called the Borderland expressing his belief in spirits & ghosts & saying they were proved by the Bible to exist & to be helps & guides to us. He was very eloquent & very earnest & very mad! Found Richard sitting with Henry on our return home & Maria also there. Blanche & Edward came & Elaine & Henry Guest to enquire. After lunch I went to see Lady Thompson & sat a little with her. Mrs Dyer called to see Henry & to say Stella had such a bad cold she could not go out. Mrs Benson came to see Henry & Sir Henry Thompson looked in to see me to say he had arranged for Stella to consult Dr Russell Reynolds at 12.30 tomorrow. He had on his fur coat & would not sit down but was in very good humour & we had a little passage of arms. He told us he had been to enquire after Edmund Yates who was taken ill at the Garrick Theatre last night & he found he had died at 5 this morning. Mr Herbert Thompson came to call & sat with Henry & then walked with me & Nela– The latter went to Pk Crest: & I went to see Mrs Dyer to tell her of the appointment made for Stella—then I went with Mrs Dyer to inspect lodgings as she rather thinks of leaving 40 Devonshire St not being very comfortable there. Then went to Pk Crest: to fetch Nela & got home just at 8. Nurse dined with us & we sat with Henry in the evening & I played patience while he looked on– Cold.
