24 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 24th May [1894]. Nurse returned home soon after 8. Her sister still alive. I got up to breakfast at 9. Maria came in to ask if I would go to the Flower show at The Temple gardens this afternoon which I agreed to do. Cripps the Commissionaire came in at 9. We arranged the drawing room & carried down Henry’s couch & he was carried down in Lady Thompson’s carrying chair by Cripps & the helper by 12 o’cl to the front drawing room. It was a bright sunny day tho’ rather windy & NE wind. I lunched alone & Maria came down at 2.30 & we drove off to the Temple Gardens. There was a very good show of orchids & one albino Catteya wh drew much attention. A band played—there was a great crowd by 4 o’cl when we came home. I sent nurse Watson on to see her sister, in the carriage. I found Lord Selborne come to see me & sat some time telling of all his difficulties as the new RA in the hanging committee at this years RA & attributes his attack of erysipelas to cold on the top of worry. Sir Henry Thompson came to see Henry. He is leaving town for a few days & proposed to get Henry out for a drive on his return. At 7 I walked round to Devonshire St to see the Dyers & found Stella very low at having to put away her violin for 3 months by orders of her Dr. I then went on to see Sophy Palmer to ask her to help me to meet Canon Knox Little that I might get him to influence Mrs Browning to make it up with her husband– Had to rush home & found Nety Montagu come to dine with me. Nela went to Woolwich with her cousins & returned home to tea & then went up to dine at her home—so Nety & I dined tete à tete. Henry was carried up to his bedroom about 9. Nety & I sat & talked till 10.30 when she left & Nela came home. I went down & spoke thro’ the window with the nurse & hear that Roberts has congestion and inflammation of the lungs but the Dr seems so far satisfied.
