25 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 25th May [1894]. I breakfasted in bed– Got up at 10. Wrote for Henry who came down to the drawing room at 11.30. Roberts had a pretty good night & was pronounced better but as the day went on he became worse. Mr Rate came to see Henry in the morng. I went out to see Lady Thompson & on to 17 Cavendish Sqr & got Blanche to go out with me shopping for an hour before lunch. Afterwards I drove with Nela & we went to Miss Pollock’s home to ask for another nurse to help at night for Roberts. He was in great pain & a good deal worse. We also telegraphed to let his mother know. We went on to Rigals for Nela to try on her drawing room gown & then came home soon after 4. Nurse Watson went twice today up to see her sick sister who is dying. We dined at 7. Lady Gregory, Mr Herbert Thompson, Nela & I went to the Daly Theatre to see Leonora Duse in the Cavalleria Rusticana & the Locandiera– She was admirable in both & we enjoyed it very much & saw lots of friends there. It was full. We were all fascinated by Duses acting. She is so graceful & clever. During dinner I got a telegram to say Roberts’ mother was coming up from Dorsetshire at 10.15 & asking us to meet her. Bertha went for her– I went down to the little yard & spoke to the Dr thro’ the window. He said Roberts was better again & out of pain & was glad to have the 2nd nurse. We have now 5 extra people 3 nurses—a man & Mrs Roberts sleeping in the house besides 2 extra women to help!
