29 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 29th May [1894]. Got up after breakfast & washed my hair. Wrote letters for Henry. Mrs Ball came to see me in the morng. Later Mrs Browning came & told me Dr Playfair has ordered her to go to Germany to study German & to divert her mind from her trouble. She began to read me a letter she had received from R. Curtis & on my saying a deprecating word in favour her husband, she thrust the letter in her pocket, burst out crying & shouted at me “Did I think she was not certain in husband had misbehaved himself with Ginevra” &c– I had great trouble in calming her down & then I insisted in her stopping to luncheon which after some resistance she did– Olga Montenegro came also to luncheon & sat with Henry while this talk was going on. Fannie recovered herself before she left me & we were once more friends. Lina Duff Gordon came with May Parnell to see me– Abt 3 Blanches Victoria called for me & I went out driving with Mama– Called on Lady Gregory as it was her day. Came home by 5.15. Mama came with me & stayed to see Henry & had cocoa in his room afterwards walking home under the care of the footman. Nela lunched with Blanche & went with her in our carriage to a Matinée at the Lyric Theatre. When Mama left I started out to buy a present for Nela’s birthday tomorrow. I met Nela coming home in the carriage so I made her get out & went in it to Edwards & Jones & then to Vere St & walked from there to 17 Cav. Sqr to see Blanche– Met Maria going in to see Mamma– Then I also saw Cecil Alderson & his daughter Mary who are in town for 2 days. Came home & found Nurse Watson in a great state of mind having found that in our absence he had walked from the drawing room upstairs to his dressing room & back. Maria came in to see Henry & then I walked up Portland Place with her & met various members of her family & brought Ruth back to dine with us. Called at the Dyers who were out & came home to dinner. Henry was not very well & was carried up to bed at 9. Nela, Ruth, Nurse Watson & I dined together. I played the guitar in the eveng to Ruth.
