31 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 31st May [1894]. Up to breakfast. Arranged my jewels to wear at the Drawing Room. Henry got up at 11.30 & then Nurse Watson went off to her sister’s funeral– I dressed at 12. Wore a white satin gown trimmed with pearl trimming which I had made last autumn & only had worn once the night of our silver wedding day. How well Henry seemed then! & how little I could forsee all the anxiety I should have had on his acct before I wore that dress again. I wore a black moire & satin striped train I had some years. Trimmed with old white lace. Diamond & pearl tiara & the 5 rows of pearls Henry gave me round my neck. Nela wore white satin dress & train. My mother sent her a lovely bouquet of white flowers. We lunched at 1. Cecil Alderson & his girl Mary—Lina Duff Gordon & Ruth Du Cane came to lunch & others of the family came in & went. We started at 2.15. There were very few people in the Entrée Room when we got to Buckingham Palace. A thunderstorm came on & it rained hard while we were there but afterwards it cleared. It was much warmer today. Nela knew a Mrs Finch & her 2 girls & we talked together. Saw Hatzfeldt, Tornielli & Rustem Pasha– Also Lady Tweedmouth & Mrs Asquith (Margot Tennant) the bride. She did not appear to me very interesting looking or pretty, & one cannot understand that she should have made such a stir in London society by her sharp remarks & pert ways. The Princess of Wales held the Drawing Room for the Queen & shook hands with both Nela & me—as did the 2 Princesses Victoria & Maud. Prince George also shook hands with me– We remained abt ½ hour in the corridor watching people pass into the Throne Room & then got home abt 4. The Misses Huth came to tea also the Dyers & Nety Montagu. Later Georgie de Perpigna & Lady Gregory. At 6 I went for a drive with Ruth & Nela & took Georgie & Augusta Gregory with me dropping Georgie at Lady Sligo’s & Augusta at Q. Anne Mansions, Ruth at the Huths & Nela & I came home. Nurse Watson had returned from the funeral just before I went out & dined in her room with her sister. Nela & I dined together. Henry was tired & went to bed at 9 & I went soon after being very tired also.
