2 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 2nd June [1894]. I breakfasted in bed & got up soon after. Henry came down abt 11.30. He seems better today. He sat in his chair & did not lie on the couch. Mrs Kay came to see him– I wrote for him a minute for the Trustees of the National Gallery on Sir F. Burton’s resignation. Mrs Rate came to see him also before lunch. Lina Duff Gordon came & stayed to luncheon. My sister Blanche came & I arranged to go with her this afternoon to see her open the “Baby Exhibition” at Humphreys Hall. It is an Exhibition of all kinds of food bags &c & appliances for the use of Babies. I took Blanche & her 2 girls there in our carriage by 2.30. A Dr Macnaughton Jones made a speech describing the uses of the Exhibition & Blanche who was seated in a chair in the centre of the platform had a lovely bouquet presented to him by a fat baby—& declared the Exhibition open. I had then to hurry off to Q. Anne’s Mansions to pick up Augusta & we went together to see Mrs Thurlow & choose some of Mrs Burr’s drawings for the Venice Church Fund Sale. I chose 6 nice ones & carried them off. Left Augusta & took Blanche’s 2 girls to their home– Passing thro’ Bond St we saw Maria & one of the twins & picked them up & sent them home after being dropped at home myself. I found Mr Haseltine sitting with Henry having come to tell him of the sale of Lady Eastlake’s pictures & which of these Poynter had bought for the Gallery. Sir Arthur Nicholson also came to see him & Sir Henry Thompson. Sir H. seems in a very nervous state about his own health & complains of his health. Mr Dyer came also to say he & Mrs Dyer & Stella would dine with us tonight. They came at 8 & sat with Henry a little after dinner. He retired to bed at ¼ to 10. The Dyers left at 11.
