4 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 4th June [1894]. Breakfasted in bed & did not rise till 12. Went out to buy a French book to read to Henry & also went to see Mama. Home to lunch. It was a steamy warm day & there was a thunderstorm early this morning. Henry was carried down to the drawing room at 11.30. After lunch Nela & I drove out bought a bonnet of Mme Robert—a mantle at Lewis & Allenby & went to leave a message at Mme Rigals. Home to tea. Mr Moscheles called & stayed some time chatting. He told me that the last letter Beethoven ever signed was to the Philharmonic society in London asking for money & he received £100 just a month before his death—that letter is in his Moscheles possession now. Lord Stanmore came & went to see Henry. Mr Herring came & gave Henry permission to go out driving tomorrow. Stella came to see him & I walked with her to her lodgings—& then on to Maria’s. Met Nela in Portland Place & she accompanied me. I went to the stables to see how the carriage could be arranged for Henry to have his feet up tomorrow. Nela & I dined at 8. I played patience & Henry looked on after dinner & he went to bed at 10.
