12 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street | |
Tuesday. 12th June [1894]. Up to 9 o’cl breakfast. Henry was better & I went in to his room for ½ hour before I dressed & talked to him. I wrote for Henry in the morng. Miss St Clair came to see me & sat some time talking. Henry got up abt 12 & came down to the drawingroom. Blanche came in just before lunch & brought Gweneth with her & the latter stayed & lunched with Nela & me. At 3 Nela & I drove & we went to call on Lady Gregory & there met a little old Lady Osborne also Sir Alfred Lyall & Mme Vincens a French authoress whose nom de plume is Arvède Barine. She spoke very fine English & seemed pleasant. We drove from the Mansions to Sloane St called on Mme Mimaut & found her at home. I took her to Walton Place & left her there & then paid a short visit to Theresa Lady Shrewsbury & got home at 5.30. Found Alice Murray with Henry & gave her some tea. Isabel Du Cane was playing the piano to Henry when Mr Herring came in later. He found Henry better rather. Sir Everett Millais had been to see Henry while I was out. Henry finds him very much broken & changed & looking very ill. Lina Duff Gordon had also been to see him & Mr Clark. Mrs Henry White came to ask me & Nela to go to opera with her on Saty to hear Verdi’s Falstaff. I went to see Mama just before dinner. Nela & Henry & I dined together. I played patience for Henry in eveng. We went up to bed at ¼ to 10. | |
