13 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 13th June [1894]. This has been a bad day & Henry has been very unwell. He had a very good night & was quite cheerful when I went in to him at 7.30. I got up for 9 o’cl breakfast & wrote letters for Henry directly after– He said he had lost the pain in his chest & eat a good breakfast so I painted a white rose into my still life. After 11 o’cl Henry began to complain of his chest & his tempe went up so I sent to Mr Herring to come. Alice Murray & her little girl Betty came to luncheon & Connie also turned up. Mr Herring came at 2.30 & ordered Henry to take quinine & to keep his bed as he was really very unwell– At 3 I went out for a drive with Nela as I felt very depressed & alarmed & I returned home calmer at 5. The Dyer family called & Stella sat a little with Henry he also saw Mrs Dyer & later Maria. At 6 his tempe was 102 & Nurse sent for Mr Herring who was out so I & Maria walked round to Sir Henry Thompson’s. I saw him & asked him if we shd to anything. He said no & we need not be alarmed. We walked on to Nottingham Place & saw Florence Layard who told us her mother is recovering & is to leave the hospital tomorrow. We parted Maria & I returned to our homes. Nela, Daisy, Nurse & I dined at 8 & the 2 girls went to a concert at Queen’s Hall. I intended going with Blanche & Connie to Lady Wantage party at the Grafton Gallery but Henry was so feverish & unwell I could not leave him so I gave my sisters the carriage & went to bed. Nurse & I changed rooms that she might be next Henry tonight. Roberts was carried upstairs from his room in the basement to one of the maid’s rooms & we hope the change of air will help him to get strong.
