14 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 14th June [1894]. Henry had a fair night. Sir Henry Thompson & Mr Herring came to him at 10.30. I breakfasted in bed & then hastened to get up to get the rooms tidied before the Drs came. After they had left Henry they came to me in the drawing room & Sir Henry told me he found the tumour decidedly increased since last he saw it—& that Henry must allow Nurse Watson to do certain things for him which hitherto he has managed for himself. I see he meant me to conclude that he finds Henry worse & that I must face the fact. I find I seemed able to bear it but later on I broke down & this has been a terrible day. For a little while before lunch I read aloud to Henry from the Memoirs of Haworth & Mme du Deffand– He was not well eno’ to read himself all the morning. Maria came in for a little while & also Blanche & Ola came to lunch & Lady Gregory who had been having a tooth extracted & was not very well. She drove with Nela & me– We called on Lady Lyall & found her at home also on Lady Clay & she was in. She showed us her beautifully worked panels in imitation of Japanese embroidery. She is wonderfully clever with her needle. We parted with Lady Gregory in Sloane St & I went to tea with Lord Selborne & Sophy Palmer. When I came in at 5.15 I found Monty sitting with Henry. Hallam Murray came & brought me plan made by Mr Ernest George to the interior of the English Church at Venice. Henry seemed a good deal better this evening & read for more than an hour. Ola came to dinner & Nurse dined down with us. Agnes left me today & Felicie entered my service in her place. Lina Duff Gordon came to see me & sat some time. She felt very much having Felicie with me–
