15 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 15th June [1894]. Henry was better & his tempe normal this morning. I had had a very agitated night & had not slept much so that I breakfasted in bed & dressed afterwards– I begin to feel the comfort of having a good maid. Felicie attended to me very nicely. Mrs Alice Hanson came to see me at 11 & sat with me a long time. She brought me her MSS book of poetry & read a good deal of Browning—but I was not strong eno’ in nerve for it & was very much upset. Maria came also & at 1 I went with her to Margaret St to see abt sending Roberts to the Eastbourne Convalescent Home– The Secy a lady got up like a nun was very civil but we came to the conclusion that Roberts is too ill for that Home & that I had better try & send him to Ventnor. Mama lunched with Nela & me. Henry got up in the morng & sat in my room & lunched there. Florence Layard came to call & told me her mother is getting better. Huntly called in the morng & brought Henry’s letters to Lady Huntly—a large packet of them—mostly written when he was in the East. As nurse & I drove out with Henry, we went by Stanhope Gate to the Park, drove by the Serpentine & pulled up there to enjoy the air for it was warm & balmy. We went round by Victoria Gate & Marble Arch to the Stanhope Gate & home by 5. Found Mr Rassam waiting to see Henry. Mr Poynter came to see him later to tell him how he has acquired 3 of Lord Northbrook’s Italian pictures for the National Gallery. Mr Rate also came & brought him some lovely flowers. Blanche came to see me—& asked me to have Mama to dine which I agreed to do. So she came at 8. Just as I was going to dress Mme Merlini (Hill) came to see me. Henry went to bed at 9. He eat a very good dinner & seemed much more himself–
