19 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 19th June [1894]. Henry had a fair night sleeping till 4 well tho not much afterwards. He had a little pain but it went off & he was anxious to go out driving & that Eda should go with us. I wrote some letters for him, 2 for myself & at ¼ to 12 he was carried downstairs & got into the carriage Eda & I going with him. We drove thro’ Gros. Square & Stanhope Gate to the Park down as far as we could go beyond the P. Consorts Monument & back to Hyde Pk Corner. There he called out to the coachman to go down by the Serpentine & round home by the Marble Arch– It was a sultry day but it blew cold across the serpentine & before we got to the Marble Arch he began to complain of pain in his chest & when we got home was suffering a great deal. We got him up to my room & Nurse put on at once a mustard plaster & he was a little better & had some soup & mince– Miss Hogarth & Alice Murray & Lina Duff Gordon came to lunch. Mr Herring came at 3 & I missed seeing him but Nurse said Henry was worse in great pain of the heart—a bad cough & Mr Herring was alarmed but wd come back at 6. Henry got a little better & slept so I walked out for ½ hour with Lina—& took her to Mme Prattens to arrange for guitar lessons. Came back & sat with Henry. Connie called & sat with me. At 6 Mr Herring came & then made me understand how serious Henry’s state is– Tho’ I knew it it nearly broke my heart to have it confirmed—but I had to try & keep up– Blanche came in & Henry asked to see her– Mr Herring came back with Sir Henry Thompson & took every ray of hope from me– I still feel as if I was in dream. Maria came & went away but returned to dinner. Edward Ponsonby came in & Henry saw him & chatted with him. After dinner he seemed really better & I even read some of his evening paper to him.
