20 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 20th June [1894]. A terrible day– He had some quiet sleep in the night– I slept with Eda Alderson & got up 3 times & went to ask how he is. Towards morng I found the lights out & all sleeping. I breakfasted in bed & then got up. Mr Herring found him a little better when he came—the heart attack had passed off—a clot of blood had got to his lung giving him pain & a bad cough. Still he was cheerful & chaffed us all & does not seem to know how ill he is. He saw Stella Dyer & Mr Rate– He was very anxious that I should go to Nelly Thompson’s wedding but I managed to get off under the plea of headache & sent Eda & Nela instead & he made them tell him all abt it when they returned. It poured with rain most of the day. I sat a great deal with him—his breathing becoming very laboured & his temperature went up– Mr Rate came back to him in the afternoon & he saw Edw Ponsonby. Mr Walter Ponsonby came to see me & was very kind. Lady Gregory came & stayed to dinner. Nurse got her sister to come & stay the night to help her. Henry took a basin of turtle soup some whitebait & champagne for his dinner. Mr Herring & Sir H. Thompson came abt 6 & said he was a little better than yesterday. But when Mr Herring came the last thing he told me he is worse. Blanche & Mr Alfred Burton came in just as I was getting to bed. I saw them both. Henry seems a little quieter so I promised Nurse to lie down & try & sleep. When I bid him good night I asked him to say God bless you darling & he did so– I had telegrams from the P. of Wales & Prince Christian to enquire after him. I telegraphed that he was a little better & I wrote to the P. of Wales– I am turning to stone. God help me.
