21 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 21st June [1894]. He had a quiet night & slept a good deal. I woke 3 or 4 times & went to the door to see how he was & only once found him awake & coughing, I got up directly after my breakfast– Blanche came in early to ask after him & all the rest of the family came in & out later. Henry saw Stella & Mr Rate in the morning– Got a telegram of enquiry from P. & Pss Christian– Later in the day from the Empress Frederick & in the evening from the Queen. Adeline Dss of Bedford came to see me & spoke beautiful & comforting words to me which helped me immensely. She told me not to be pettish but to make the last days happy to him & beautiful to look back upon. She said I had lived 25 years in the sunshine of his love & now I must look for a beautiful sunset. Sophy Palmer also came to see me & was very kind & good. I sat a great deal with him & only went out abt 4.30. Just drove with Eda to the door of the Atheneum & dear old Sir James Lacaita came out & sat talking to me in the carriage. He looks fearfully ill—& very feeble, but he was cheerful & full of jokes. He said “I can understand that at 25 a man’s heart should beat faster—but at 85 I cant see the reason of it.” Ask your husband what he thinks”– Then we drove to Albemarle St & from there walked home by tea time. Blanche & Edward came in after dinner– Mr Herring came about 10 & then we discussed whether we should have Sir Rd Quain to see Henry & decided against to my relief & B & Edward concurring. Nurse’s sister came & took the night work.
