28 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 28th June [1894]. He had a sleeping draught so that after 3 AM he slept quietly till & was rather better—tho’ his fever was rather high again in the afternoon. I sat with him nearly all day. In the morning he dozed a good deal. In the afternoon he was more wakeful & dictated a letter to George Scharf & I finished reading to him the article in the “Revue.” Merthyr arrived just before lunch. He & Theo returned yesterday from their 3 months trip to America & after just going home to Inwood for the night he came to town for a few hours to see Henry– Lunched with me & returned by 3 o’cl train home. Monty also came about 5 & also saw Henry. Otway & Rate visited him. Abt 6.30 Maria came & I went for a walk with her up to her house to see Ola & on to Harley Place to see the Dyers. I was received with gloomy faces by Mr & Mrs D. & after a few moments they intimated that they were aware that Stella was not welcome in my house &c &c. I was astounded & begged to know what had happened & they proceeded to pour out grievances. I being perfectly innocent said I could not understand it all—& after saying so I left them but not before I had broken down; but quickly recovering went out & joined Maria & went home to dinner. It is evident that Stella is annoyed because she was only allowed to see Henry for a few moments at a time since he has been so ill. At 9 o’cl I went out in open carriage & took Sophie Palmer with me. We drove for an hour in Hyde Park. It was a delicious night—there was a nice cool wind after the very hot day. On my return home I found a note from Mrs Dyer asking to see me either tonight or tomorrow—so I suppose she has repented.
