29 June 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 29th June [1894]. Altho’ Henry took a sleeping draught last night he had a bad night & when Mr Herring came at 9 he found him very weak & ill. However he slept a good deal in the morng & got better as the day went on. His cough less & less fever—& slept again a good deal after lunch. Lord Aberdare came in the morng but he could not see him. Mrs Dyer came to see me & we made friends again. I am sorry for her poor thing—she is not well & has many worries—both abt Stella’s health & also their being so very poor– Cornelia came—also Blanche. I read the Times aloud to Henry. After lunch Mrs Bagot came & then the Bishop of Gibraltar. He went in to see Henry for a few minutes & afterwards asked me if Henry would like him to pray with him he would come at any time he might wish. Lady Gregory came to tea & at 6 I went for a little walk with her. It was a very hot day & only got cool quite late. I got home at 7 & a few minutes after Sir Henry Thompson came to see Henry. He sat with him some time & told me afterwards he found Henry’s pulse good & not fevered– He said Henry had asked him if he thought he might ever go to Venice & he did not wish to discourage him & said it was yet too soon to form any plans & that he must get very much better before he could allow him to put the sea between him & his surgeons. Henry had a good dinner—Quail soup with a quail & rice in it—a plate of whitebait & a peach. His cough was quieter & he was calm– Eda & Nela went to Lady Radnor’s concert of the amateur band. Lady Gregory stayed dinner & went driving with me at 9. We drove in Hyde Park. It was a delicious eveng. A band was playing & quantities of people sitting listening. I took Augusta home to Q. Mansions & on my return home found Mr Rate sitting waiting for me. Henry was quiet & asleep.
