1 July 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 1st July [1894]. My 51st birthday. Henry did not have a very quiet night but was rather better this morning. I sat with him & read the Observer to him. He was interested in hearing abt the Adrian Hope sale which brought in nearly £48000. Lady Gregory came to lunch– It was a tremendously hot day & tho’ Henry had no fever he felt the heat very much & was very exhausted– Nurse went out with her cousin Nelly Watson & I took her place. I read a little to him. Rd Du Cane came—also Maria—Raymond Layard who has just returned from Japan with his wife & child. Sir Henry Thompson paid Henry a visit & was pleased to find him better—tho depressed. He met Stella Dyer when he came back to the drawing room. She was waiting to see Henry. She cd not stay long with him as he was tired & her father & mother came & fetched her home & Henry told me today to see if his light leather travelling bag was in his room & that I had better lock it up as one side contained papers which were to be opened directly if anything happened to him—that he had left me a sum of money to dispose of entirely as I liked in case I wanted to give some to any of my nieces & that he wishes Nela to have £1000 given to her. I write down this now while I remember it tho I hope it may be long before I need think of it again. At 6.30 Ivor came as Henry was not up to seeing him I went out with him to services at St James’ Piccadilly. We left before the sermon & I walked home alone getting in just at 8. Nela & I dined alone. Mr Rate came afterwards & saw Henry. Mr Herring came at 10 & then we all retired. Still a hot night.
