31 July 1894 — Chenies
Tuesday. 31st [July 1894]. Took a turn in the village & back to Woodside Cottage by the church & thro’ the wood before lunch at 2. Afterwards took a last turn together in the Italian garden & by the trout stream & then left by 4.24 train for London & once more I begin the battle of life—this time alone– The house at Q. Anne St seemed so empty & lonely on arriving– We had tea in the morning room. Ola came in for a few moments & later B & Edward Ponsonby. Nurse took leave of me & returned to her lodgings at 42 Dorset Street & so ends the last links with our long sad watching together– She came to us on 11th April & has been good, devoted, clever & kind—a true friend & has been of the greatest help in every way. Henry often told me during the last fortnight how much he liked her & how clever she was– Emilia Riaño & her husband came at 7. They have just come to England. Emilia remains on a visit to me– I went round to Cav. Sqr with Blanche to see Mama who leaves for Peterboro’ tomorrow to stay with Kate. Found her agitated making her will &c &c & she wanted to give me something out of her rooms wh I begged her not to do. I feel I have already too much to take care of in my own things—& care so little now for anything. Emilia & I dined alone & went early to bed. I slept in my own room for the first time since it all happened.
