2 August 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 2nd August [1894]. This has been a terrible day—the worse I have had since I went away to Chenies– I seemed to wake up more from my stupor & to realize more my great loss. It is just a month since it all happened—& it seems ages! Emilia & I breakfasted soon after 9—& then sat talking. Nurse Watson came for me at 11 & at 12 she walked with me to Sir Wm Savory the great surgeon—before lunch who kindly saw me to talk over Lina Duff Gordon’s health– He had told her she ought not to remain in Italy, but he said to me that he only meant in the summer. He spoke very kindly and affectionately about her– I walked home by Duke St & parted with dear little Nurse in Oxford St. It made me very sad– Connie came to lunch & drove with me afterwards & we did a little shopping & got home to 5 o’cl tea. I met Isabel Layard & asked her & Raymond to come & see me which they did. Sir Henry Thompson came to see me & spoke very kindly & promised to write to me—& we talked over how I might arrange for the final resting place for Henry at Canford. Monty came for a few minutes & arranged to meet us at Weymouth tomorrow. Came home in Bond St we passed Maria & Isabel in Bond St & brought them home to tea– Later Ola & Nela came & helped me to lock up in Henry’s library the book cases as Cowtan’s man having at last finished the odious valuing– I also arranged a little Henry’s bureau—which seemed to finish breaking me heart & then I fairly broke down—& only recovered for dinner to which Henry [sic] came. Mr Alfred Burton came also after dinner and they left early & we went up & I did more packing & arranging till late.
