3 August 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 3rd August [1894]. Up to 9 o’cl breakfast. Louis Du Cane came in soon after to say some last words on business & then Arthur DC. came & offered to meet me at Waterloo Station & see me off. Ola, Nela & their mother came in also M. de Riaño—at ¼ to 12 Emilia Riaño & I went off to the station & Arthur met us. My brother Arthur had ordered me a carriage so we were alone all the way to Weymouth. We passed by Woking & it was terrible to think that Henry’s mortal remains were there & that only one month ago they had brought him on this his last journey. When we passed thro’ Bournemouth I was reminded of our visit there together last year. In fact it gets worse every hour as I realize it more. We got to Weymouth ¾ hour late. My brother Monty met us & drove us to his little house Devonshire House– A tiny little house full of all his beautiful things—& 3 bedrooms wh just takes in Emilia, me & Felicie; Bertha & John lodge next door. Monty just showed me the house & hurried back to the Station as he was returning to Cowes for the Race week– Emilia & I had tea & rested—& then dined at 7.30. Afterwards we went for a walk. There was a band playing & crowds of people walking by the sea—but we managed to get away into the quiet. A lovely evening & in the gloaming the sea calm—the distant lights—all was picturesque—& soft—& it seemed almost like a place abroad. I felt how Henry would of enjoyed it—it had somewhat the appearance of the lake of Lucerne. When a bell rang to announce a steamer stopping it was even more like & it came over me how fond Henry had been of Lucerne. I feel quite undone today.
