9 August 1894 — Devonshire House, Weymouth
Thursday. 9th [August 1894]. Emilia & I took the 10 o’cl steamer & went to Portland which took us ½ hour. We walked to Chiswell Beach & sat there enjoying the fresh sea air & watching the waves rolling in which in the course of ages have raised a great bank of stones each one worn flat & smooth with the action of the water. We walked back to the 12 o’cl steamer & were home at 12.30. Wrote letters after lunch– Read aloud to Emilia more of the “The light of the world” which we agree in not liking. After tea we went for a walk along the bay to the gardens & sat there some time. It was a grey day but fine. The town is still en fête & the volunteers still encamped on the hill opposite to our house. Back to dinner at 7.30. Read aloud to Emilia the Memoirs till bed time.
