10 August 1894 — Devonshire House, Weymouth
Friday. 10th August [1894]. Emilia & I took a walk after breakfast along the Esplanade & on the pier & sat talking till it was time for her to go to the station & to return to London by 12.50 train. She would not let me go to the station with her. She is to go & live at No 1 Queen Ann St as long as she & her husband remain in London. We wondered whether we should meet again. The Riaños can seldom afford to leave Spain—& we had not met for 5 or 6 years. Emilia was my only intimate friend at Madrid & was always so clever & helpful. Henry & I got into the way of saying “Ask Mme Riaño” if there was anything we wanted to know. When she was gone I was at length alone—for the first time since I married—indeed almost in my life– I must begin to get accustomed to the idea– In fact I must be quite by myself for a time—to rest & take it all in. I read over some of Henry’s old letters to his cousin my aunt “Lady Aboyne” she was then. She had kept all Henry’s letters to her– I passed the evening after dinner reading more—full of activity & life & hope & plans for the future many of wh he realized. What a beautiful life! After lunch I wrote many letters & amongst them one to our dear Empress, & after tea went out to post them & to take an hour’s walk before dinner.
