20 August 1894 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Monday. 20th [August 1894]. Arthur ordered a fly from Wareham & Louis & I drove over to Canford straight to the church as I wanted to choose the spot where Henry’s ashes are to be deposited. Mr Fawkes the clergyman met us– We did not settle any thing whether in the church or outside. Louis went to the village to see Mr Paterson, I walked to the Nineveh porch. It was locked but I could see thro’ the glass doors that all was neat & well kept. I walked on the Wimborne road & Louis picked me up. He did not find Paterson but afterwards met him on the road & stopped & spoke to him. We drove to the station & I found a train just going to Weymouth so I went by it & got there soon after 1. The servants did not expect me so I did not get lunch till 2. I wrote letters the whole afternoon before & after tea till dinner. I had just begun dinner when Monty looked in at the window. He had just arrived at the Club for the Regatta week. He sat with me while I dined & then returned to the Club & I wrote again till bed time. He tells me that all the smart people of Cowes are coming here so I settled to go away till the Regattas are over. I shall probably go to Branksome Dene.
