2 September 1894 — Devonshire House, Weymouth
Sunday. 2nd September [1894]. Felicie let me sleep & I breakfasted in bed but was up soon after 9. Copied letters & then dressed to go to church & was just setting off when Monty turned up. He had just come in his little yacht from Dartmouth so I remained at home & talked to him & so missed the time for going to church. He went off to the Club very soon & I returned to my writing. He came back to lunch & went out again. I copied till tea time & then walked off to the gardens & was out an hour & then copied till 8 o’clock dinner to which Monty came. We talked till bed time. He told me how Ivor in pity wrote to tell him that tho’ he would continue to give him £4000 a year for life he withdrew his promise to settle money on him– A promise he made him 25 years ago. The other brothers had had their settlement & Monty is the only one left out. He is dreadfully hurt & vexed as they have never had any quarrel– Ivor certainly has behaved very ill– How sad it is that the best men do odd things about money. At the same time Ivor is giving his daughters £100,000 on their marriages.
