3 September 1894 — Devonshire House, Weymouth
Monday. 3rd September [1894]. It was a terribly wild night. Monty slept on board his yacht. I was kept awake most of the night by the roar of the wind, the splash of the rain & the shaking of the house. Got up to 8 o’cl breakfast & copied more letters. I am more & more in admiration of Henry’s great activities & versatility in those years of his Parliamentary life. What splendid activity & energy & love of right & justice. It makes me proud more & more of him & I seemed to live over those days with him. At that time I was only a child & knew little of him tho’ I always even then had a great feeling for him. Monty came in abt 11 & then went off to the Club & returned again at 2 to luncheon– He left by a 4.20 train to go to shoot at Lord Wolverton’s. It blew hard all day. After tea I took a hour’s walk & then copied again till bed time only stopping to dine at 8. I moved down to Monty’s room where I dont hear the wind so much. I wrote several letters. Bertha told me she decides to remain till the spring with me & has put off her marriage. I wrote to Lady Gregory & let out my heart a little to her which feels at times that it will break.
