15 September 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 15th [September 1894]. I had a sleepless night so I breakfasted in bed & got up late. Had a visit from Elaine Guest who was very nice & affectionate. She came before lunch– After lunch I went out for a walk & in Vere St I came suddenly upon Ida Dss of Sermoneta. We neither of us knew the other was in town. I walked back to her sister’s 2 Cavendish Square with her & she promised to come & see me on Monday. I then took a walk by Bond St to Piccadilly & back by Berkeley Square to Wimpole St & paid Lady Thompson a visit. She was very kind to me & tried to comfort me for I was upset at seeing her again after all that had happened alas! I then stopped at Mr Herring’s house 50 Harley St & paid him a long visit & we spoke much about Henry—his life—his talent—his energy & his courage in his last illness—& then I returned home to tea. This morning Ola came to see me & we had a great discussion on a plan she has of going to learn nursing in a hospital, I saying that Henry would have so much disapproved of it—& she that it was necessary she should work to help her family. After tea Louis DC came to see to talk over the arrangement of making my will & then I talked to him abt Ola & said I would give her £100 a year if she gave up the nursing. Nurse Watson came & dined with me & she stayed talking till 10.30 when I went to bed.
