16 September 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 16th September [1894]. I thought I would go to service at St Margarets Westr to see again the church where the funeral was– I used often to go to church there from 3 Savile Row when we lived there with Monty but I hardly remembered the church & how beautiful it was. I walked there & got in a few minutes late. The service is simple & not too long. I did not remain for the sermon but took a hansom & went to Queen’s Gardens to see Mrs Arthur Hanson. She is laid up in bed with lumbago. I sat with her a while & then returned home to luncheon. Afterwards I took out Henry’s Nineveh his first book & began to read till Sir Frederick Burton came to call– Then Mr Herbert Thompson joined us—but he did not stay long, & Sir Frederick & I had tea & talked about Henry & his wonderful life—& then we talked of the Venice Church & discussed the plan for the internal decoration & he went away abt 6. Nurse Watson then came & we went to Henry’s dressing room & turned out his clothes & chose out things for a hospital &c– This is terrible work & quite broke me down. It was like giving away bits of himself & wiping away the last traces of his identity. Nurse sat with me till 8 when Louis Du Cane came to dine with me.
