17 September 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 17th September [1894]. I was writing after breakfast when Mr Rate came in as he had heard that I wanted to see him. He took me out & we walked down Regent St to Gaffin’s to see about the Monument I am going to put up over Henry’s ashes at Canford & looked at some Aberdeen red granite for it. He brought me home & left me at the door. Kate my sister arrived just before luncheon to stay till tomorrow. Early this morning Ola came up from Wimbledon to see me as I had sent to say I wanted to see her. She had got a notion that she would go for three years into a hospital & learn nursing a thing I know Henry would have disapproved of– I told her so & begged her to give it up & offered to give her £100 per annum from now. She had settled to go down to see a hospital at Brighton & said she would give it up & went off to settle that returning to lunch with Kate & me. After lunch I walked with Kate & helped her to shop down Regent St & back by Bond St. Had tea at 5 & a long talk with Kate over the last sad days. The Dss of Sermoneta came abt 6—& paid me a long visit & was most kind & affecate. Then Kate & I went to 17 Cav. Sqr to meet Mr Whitman & chose a souvenir for Mama to give me, as she is anxious I should have something. Came home & dressed & Sir Henry Thompson came to dine with us—& left at 10. Our butler Roberts told me that Dr Abbott Anderson told him to say that tho’ recovered from his late illness it has left his lung & heart very delicate & he could not undertake the Venice work without John to help him. He was very much upset & had tears in his eyes. I agreed to take John & to let him try if it will work in this way. He is so good & conscientious that I will give him the chance & hope that the climate of Italy may carry him through.
