19 September 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 19th [September 1894]. A very busy day & a hard one for me—getting everything in order for the start to Venice tomorrow– Louis Du Cane came with papers for me to sign & I went out with him to a Commr of Oaths to swear to a signature. Louis went on his way to Grey’s Inn & I went round by Bond St home again. Alice Murray came to lunch with me—& then Maria & Ola came. Maria came up today from Bournemouth to see us off. She & I went out shopping for an hour– Ola & Alice went out together & all came in to tea & Hallam joined us. Dacre came to see me. Sir Henry Thompson also came—& then Louis Du Cane came & brought my will for me to sign– Then I packed my hand bag & had dinner in the morning room—but my strength was out—& I had to come up to bed quite worn out & broken down– I am now reading some of Tennyson’s In Memoriam & am quieter—& hope for a better night than the last to get calm for the journey.
