24 September 1894 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Monday. 24th [September 1894]. Up at 8. Lunch at 12. Sat talking with the Countess & then went out with her round the garden to look at her flowers. At 4 we drove she & I & her brother the Professor to the Carbonara farm & had tea there in the kitchen she has arranged for the purpose. On Friday night at the farm called the Graminosa thieves had tried to steal the standing Indian corn & had fired on the farm people when disturbed– On Saty night they did the same thing & yesterday the Css called in the carabinieri who were on the alert & they did not return last night. The thieves are well known to have come from the property adjoining hers which belongs to a man of bad reputation now a Deputy in Parliament! We dined at 6.30– Bed early.
