1 October 1894 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Monday. 1st October [1894]. Took early breakfast in my room at 8. The Countess made her appearance at 10. It was pouring in torrents but cleared later. After giving us a slight refreshment Ola & I took leave of her & her brother the Professor & drove to St Elena to take the 12.30 train to Venice. Geminiano the old coachman was in such a hurry to get us off that we got to the station one hour too soon—& then after all the officials did not let us out on to the platform till just too late & we had to clamber in to the train on the wrong side. It got dark & rainy as we got near Venice & there was a very high tide. Francesco the gondolier & Roberts were on the platform & we were soon home– It is heartbreaking. It seems so empty & sad. Got lunch & then unpacked till tea time.
