4 October 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 4th October [1894]. Fine day & warmer. Ola & I worked nearly all the morning at arranging some of the books in Henry’s library. Heart breaking work as so many books had his signature outside them & made me feel how he had read them & kept them & almost as if we had no right to touch them. Last night I sat up till after twelve reading the letters he wrote to me after our engagement—in one of the last he says he looks forward to the day of our marriage that we should not be separated any more—& we were never separated till he left me for the next world. Ola & I lunched early & at 2 went in gondola to the Eden’s garden where he used to be so fond of going. The day was lovely just as he would have liked. I read to Ola on the way there & back so as not to think so much. The Edens were alone at the garden with their friend Miss Parnell—& so I stayed to tea & got home soon after 5. Mr Corry was waiting for me. I showed him Mr Ernest George’s plans for the decoration of the inside of the English church & talked it over with him. Then Admiral Canevaro came to see me & was most kind. He assured me again how universal in this town had been the grief when the news came of Henry’s death—& how much he was beloved—& he had tears in his eyes. We dined at 8—& played patience.
