6 October 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 6th October [1894]. Out of bed at 7 & read till breakfast at 9. Ola & I spent almost the whole morning window gardening repotting &c. Signor Trombini came to see me & condole. He poor man understands my trouble—having lost his wife after 2 years marriage. He has made her grave into a garden & spends 3 hours daily at the cemetery tending the flowers. It was a very fine day—almost hot so directly after luncheon. Ola & I went off in gondola to the Edens garden & I sat with Carrie & had tea there. On the way home I left Ola at the church to attend the choir practise. Wrote a letter & arranged papers—& then read in my bedroom till dinner. Read aloud to Ola an article from the 19th century & played patience.
