10 October 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 10th October [1894]. Splendid weather. M. Blumenthal the banker called in the morning to express sympathy & offer his services & that of his banking house. I read in the library part of Henry’s MS autobiography. Miss Holas came to see me to condole. Directly after lunch I went off in gondola to the Eden’s house & Mr & Mrs Eden, Miss Parnell & I went out in the launch. We went to see Mr Eden’s new farm at S. Erasmo a pretty orchard with fig, apple, walnut & peach trees besides vineyards & haystacks. We returned to the garden at the Giudecca where Ola met me in gondola & brought me home. Had a solemn visit from old Mrs Montalba & 2 daughters Ellen & Hilda—which was trying to me—but they were most kind. Ola took out Hilda in the sandolo after dinner. I played patience.
