12 October 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 12th October [1894]. Up at 7. Read till breakfast. Dull day & heavy scirocco the sun did not come out till 2. Wrote letters sent cheques to England to pay bills– Read Henry’s MS. After lunch Ola & I gardened in the windows for an hour & then went out in gondola to the Fondamenta Nuove where we walked up & down & then to S. Focaria where we found the gondola. I dropped Ola at S. Vio & went home. The Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar accompanied by Sr Barozzi came to call on me to express his sympathy & regret abt Henry saying also how well he remembered the house & the pleasant time he had spent talking to Henry the last time he the Duke was in Venice. I gave him tea & they then left. Later Mr Carey called & then Ersilia Canevaro & also Mlle Kwekwitsch, Olga Montenegro’s Aunt. I had just time to write 2 letters before dinner. Ola went out in sandolo & took Olga Montenegro. I played patience & then to bed.
