26 October 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 26th [October 1894]. I breakfasted alone. Spent the morning arranging old letters. Cini came to see Bertha again who is still in bed. He spoke yesterday much about Henry’s illness. How he saw at once the day Henry called him in & showed him his tumour that it would kill him & that knowing that he thought he wd be better in England among his own friends—& that had he remained here another week he wd not have been able to travel at all. He said he knew people had wondered at his sending him home but he had considered it his duty as the best for us both. He spoke with great kindness & feeling. Ola got up for lunch & then she & I went to the Eden’s garden & I sat with Mr Eden for an hour on the Sacca—& then left Ola at the Piazzetta & came home to tea. After dinner Ola went to a musical party at Mrs Gardners—& I played patience.
