16 November 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 16th November [1894]. Blanche went out in the morning to the Miracoli church with Ersilia. Edward & I finished arranging Henry’s private correspondence till lunch when Mr & Mrs Rennell Rodd came. She is rather a pretty woman—dark– He is fair & is very pleasant & is considered very clever. He recommends me to go to the Ghesireh Hotel & not the Pyramids as Ivor suggests & gave me all the information I asked for. Ola was not well & remained in bed all day. Edward & B went out with the Rodds & I meant to remain at home & write but Olwen begged me to go out with her in the sandolo so we set off & she rowed. We went up the Grand Canal & round the Giudecca to the station thence we meant to walk home & were just abt to land when Olwen stretched out to catch hold of the wall & only succeeded in touching it pushed off the boat—lost her balance & in she fell! The boy who was with us, & I both caught hold of her at once & quickly pulled her into the boat all dripping & frightened! But she was soon reassured & the boy quickly rowed us home & she changed her clothes & had tea in Ola’s room. Edward & Blanche came in to tea abt 6 & I told them what had happened & they were not alarmed. We dined at ¼ to 8 & directly afterwards went to the Sailor’s Institute where there was a “social eveng.” The sailors sang—& so did the Ponsonbys & I provided tea– The entertainment ended abt 11 o’cl.
