20 November 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 20th November [1894]. Today is the Queen of Italy’s birthday & Blanche & Edward & Olwen went with Ola to hear the Te Deum at St Marks. I remained at home & wrote letters &c. At 1 Countess Pisani came to lunch & had a long talk with Edward abt the schools & education in Italy. She left at 3 & then Ola went out with her & I went in gondola with Blanche & Edward & Olwen followed in sandolo. We went up the canal to the station & out on the lagune & back by the Giudecca landed on the Zattere & walked to the Browns to leave cards & walked home by tea time. It was a lovely day & not too warm. Countess Canevaro came to tea & her husband joined her. Trombini came for Blanche & Olwen to practise & they sang duetts with Ersilia Canevaro. Blanche read aloud to me before breakfast & again before dinner. Canevaro told us that the new Venetian patriarch has published such a violent pastoral letter that the authorities here will have nothing to do with him– They had arranged to meet him & do all they could to make his entry a grand one on Sunday next but have now given it up.
