24 November 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 24th November [1894]. Today the New Patriarch Cardinal Sarto made his public entry into Venice. Blanche & E. went out after breakfast together & then returned abt 12.30 & went with Ola & Olwen to the station to see him arrive. He walked first to the Scalzi to pray & then came up the grand canal which was decorated with flags & hangings. Blanche & E. returned to lunch with me, the 2 girls went to Pal: Barbaro to see him pass there. After lunch Blanche, Ed & I went in gondola to the Piazzetta & walked by the Riva to the Arsenal—left their cards on Adl Noce & we walked back to the Piazza– B & I walked home. Edward went to see Mrs Eden & joined us later. Mr Dyer came to call after 5. Then Blanche read aloud till dinner time & Edward read again after dinner. It was a fine but rather cold day—& looked rather like snow.
