9 January 1895 — Cairo | |
Wednesday. 9th [January 1895]. I got up at 9 having had tea in bed. Went to see H.G. whom I found still in bed. Stood talking to him for some time. Elaine’s throat still painful & I persuaded her not to drive to the Pyramids today. She & I drove into Cairo at 12 in the Hotel omnibus & went to Cook’s office & paid for & took our tickets for going up the Nile in the “Prince Mohammed Ali.” Came home by Boulac & the ferry. Found H.G. had got up & was lying on the sofa in the sitting room when we came upstairs after our luncheon. The weather was chilly & dull & there were occasionally a few drops of rain a thing of rare occurrence here. We had a visit from Mrs & Miss Morgan—people that H.G. had made acquaintance with in Cairo—a lively widow with a delicate looking daughter. Lady Alfred Churchill & her daughter came to tea with us. H.G. kept on the sofa & was not able to walk. Elaine & I decided after many pros & cons not to leave tomorrow but to join our steamer on Monday at Assiout. E & I dined downstairs. H.G. dined upstairs. There was a hotel ball in the Casino here. | |
