10 January 1895 — Cairo
Thursday. 10th January [1895]. I overslept myself this morng & Felicie had a difficulty in getting into our rooms. Luckily Elaine heard her knocking & got up & let her in & then Roberts took off our boxes on board the Prince Mohammed Ali. H.G. seemed better this morng & Elaine’s throat nearly well. Lord Cromer came to see me abt 11 o’cl. He is a good looking man & looks clever & strong & was very amiable. H.G. came in to the sitting room abt 12 & there remained all day. Elaine & I went at 3 into the town on the Hotel brake & did a little shopping. We met Lady V. & Miss Lambton & asked them to come to tea & we met them at our hotel at 5. They sat some time with us. Dr Sandwith came abt 6 & said he is not sure whether H.G. can start for England on Sunday but he will come & decide on Saturday. Elaine had a headache so she dined upstairs with her brother & I alone went down to the Restaurant. A post came in today from England & brings very bad news of my poor mother. Her lungs are now affected—& I fear there is no hope– Blanche writes very low about her. She & Maria were with her at Canford.
