11 January 1895 — Cairo
Friday. 11th January [1895]. Elaine awoke with headache. H.G. still with fever & his leg bad. They both got up later. Elaine & I copied a water colour sketch & tried to do it by a receipt in a book– After lunch I drove out with Henry Guest in a landau. We went into Cairo & to Cook’s office to find out when he cd get to England & he found he cd leave for Marseilles next Tuesday. We took a drive thro’ old Cairo a wonderful scene & the whole population seemed swarming in the streets. We went as far as the Coptic convent but did not get out & returned to Ghesireh by ¼ to 5. Elaine had been walking in the garden. A Mr Ravenscroft & Miss Daisy Spencer Churchill rode out from Cairo & came to tea with us. Elaine & I dined downstairs & afterwards heard a young Italian prodigy play the violin. A fair boy of abt 10—with great execution. Elaine made acquaintance with the 2 Princesses Duleep Sing who are staying in the hotel & whose brothers are great friends of Elaine’s brother Ivor.
