14 January 1895 — On the Nile
Monday. 14th January [1895]. After a rather slow journey thro’ country lighted up with a splendid moon—speeding past palm trees, mud villages—shepherds “keeping their flocks by night” sitting by flaming fires we woke at 5.30 & watched the dawn coming, made some tea & prepared to leave the railway when we reached Assiout at 8.30. There we were taken charge of by Cook’s Interpreter & conducted in little carriages to the landing place on the Nile. We arrived just as breakfast was being prepared for all passengers—so we tidied ourselves & joined in the meal. As soon as it was over the passengers started on donkeys on an expedition. We found on board some of the passengers on the P&O. Mr Lambton, Mr Mossop & Mr Debarrito & just filled a small table at one end of the dining saloon with our party. Lady Victoria with great energy went off with the excursion party. Miss Lambton went to rest—& as soon as Elaine & I had dressed we two with Mr Mossop went for a donkey ride thro’ the bazaars of Assiout. The bazaars are small & there seemed nothing interesting to buy except red pottery made from Nile mud. At 12 the whole party returned– At 1 we lunched. Among our fellow passengers is a fire eating Frenchman a cidevant cavalry officer who was very exciteable finding fault with his food, coffee &c. I spent the afternoon quietly at the stern of the boat reading & drawing. At 4.30 we had tea– At 7 dinner—& at 9 went to bed. We passed quaint & picturesque towns & villages—palm groves & fine scenery. At 7.30 the steamer stopped for the night at Maragha, but too dark for anything to be seen.
