22 January 1895 — Aswan | |
Tuesday. 22nd January [1895]. Breakfast at 8.30 & then we all went off in a ferry boat to the W. bank of the river to see the tombs uncovered in 1882 by Genl Grenfell. We had a tiresome climb up the hill thro’ the deep sand. One tomb was very interesting having a long passage with niches on each side containing figures like sentinels. The painting on the wall over a kind of altar was very bright & seemed just done. We then sailed round the Island of Elephantine landed there & went to see the view & then returned to the steamer to lunch. After lunch the mail came in & I got a telegram of 16th to say my mother died the day before. The telegram was forwarded by post hence the delay. Altho’ I felt sure she would not recover it came as a kind of shock. The Lambtons went out sailing. Elaine remained with me & she painted. I wrote several letters by the post which left at 4.30. My last letters from Canford are of 8th & in them I was told my mother was so weak she could no longer turn in bed and she no longer wished to be told anything. It will be some time before I get letters giving more particulars. Heard also of Sir James Lacaita’s death. Scarcely a year ago we were with him Henry & I at Leucaspide—now both friends are gone from this world– | |
