24 January 1895 — Aswan | |
Thursday. 24th January [1895]. Wrote letters in the morning. Elaine went to lunch with Lord & Lady Compton on board their Dahabeeyah the Osiris. At 3.30 she & I, the Lambtons & Messrs Mossop & de Barrito went out in a boat & sailed up the Nile towards the Cataract. Very pretty scenery. We went past small rocky islands & wild rocky banks. There was very little wind & our Arabs had mostly to row us up wh they did to their wild monotonous chant. We landed on a creek on a rocky island & made our tea. Two wild naked boys came to us in a little canoe of skins with a large ragged sail & we made them paddle down a small rapid near us. We took a little walk on the island & then came back to Assouan got back just in time for dinner. After dinner we sat on board the Sethi with our party. The dining room was so hot that several of our party felt faint & had to leave the table. | |
