26 January 1895 — Aswan | |
Saturday. 26th January [1895]. I got up before 7 & with Mr Mossop went to the station to go by 8 o’cl train– After waiting for a time we found we were not to start before 9 for Shellac—someone having asked that the train should be put off for a bit. There was a lady & gentleman going also who were much put out at the delay a Mr & Mrs Marshall & she & I sat & chatted. At last the time came & Lord Egerton of Tatton & his bride the Dss of Buckingham & Major [illegible word] & others got in & we went off. It took us abt ½ hour thro’ the desert & we passed encampments of Besharet Arabs & quantities of camels belonging to the Camel Corps. On arriving at Shellac Mr Mossop & I went across to the Island of Philæ in the ferry. There I found the American Artist Mr Newman & his wife. Mr Newman was painting in the temple & his wife sitting by him embroidering. I had known them at Florence. She showed us over the temples & explained it all– When the rest of our party joined us, having ridden on donkeys from Assouan Elaine & I settled ourselves to sketch only stopping for a short time for lunch. At 1.30 some of us went to the Newman dahabeeyah to take coffee & to see his pictures. They were anchored in a lovely spot just under “Pharaoh’s bed”. Abt 3 we all met at the landing place & started in a felucca for return to Assouan by the cataract. We stopped en route to see the boys going down the stream on logs of wood or swimming which they did very cleverly—but we were pestered by beggars & people wishing to get backsheesh & offering to precipitate themselves into the water. We were disappointed with the cataract which is in reality only a rapid—but on going down it in one place we got some water into the boat. The Nile is still high & it is probable that late in the season there is more excitement in shooting the cataract. We returned to Assouan abt 4.30 & had tea & rested– Sat on the Sethi after dinner. | |
