27 January 1895 — Aswan | |
Sunday. 27th January [1895]. There was a service on board the Steamer “Rameses” to which we went—Lady Victoria & I—the girls did not venture into the saloon as it was very full & hot. At 12.30 Elaine & I went over the river to lunch with the Egertons on their dahabeeyah the “Tih.” I spoke to Lord Egerton yesterday at the Philæ & he introduced me to his wife & she asked us to lunch– I hesitated but finally accepted & I am glad now that I did so as the Dss was very kind & sympathising with me. She said she guessed my trouble as soon as she saw me in the train yesterday & longed to speak to me. She has evidently not forgotten her first husband & spoke of such sorrow with tears in her eyes—putting her thick veil over them so her husband should not notice it. She is a handsome woman with a sweet expression—still young and with a beautiful figure—& I am very thankful to her for her kind words. I remained in my room writing the rest of the afternoon. | |
