26 February 1895 — Cairo
Tuesday. 26th [February 1895]. I breakfasted at 8.30 on the terrace. Went to read a little in French to Lady Ashburton who was not well & was not up. Her niece Miss Arbuthnot wanted to go in to Cairo to see her sister Mrs Middleton who is ill at the Continental Hotel so I offered to accompany her. We started directly after lunch & got there at 2.30. At the Hotel I paid a visit to the Biddulphs & they asked me to return to tea. I walked to Nazli Khanum’s near the Abdeeri Palace & called on her & did not leave her till 5 when I walked to do a little shopping near Shepherd’s & then to the Continental & had tea in Lady Freda’s room. She returned before I left & told me that there was no news except Lord Aberdare’s death! This shocked me dreadfully. As his sister in law Mrs Miles had told me at Mena House he was so well. Another friend gone before—to join Henry in the other world! Miss Arbuthnot & I started for Mena soon after 6 & arrived just in time for dinner. After dinner went up to see Mrs Miles & condole with her. Then paid a little visit to Lady Ashburton & went to bed.
